Pyometra

Last few weeks, DM's pet dog, Naomi, 8 years old, was not feeling well. She refuse to eat but drink excessively. DM usually feed her dogs ( we have another male dog, Neil ) with food pellets adding some meat floss to bribe them to eat. Naomi refused to eat them even when her plate is more of meat then her usual pellet. Worse, She vomited.
So, we figure that something was wrong and bring her to the Vet. She was diagnosed for digestion problem/ indigestion. Vet said she is old ( although she's only 8, Maltese can live to 15 years old ) and because lack of maintenance from her previous owner ( she was given by my friend when she moved to Jakarta ) she get old faster ( she has lost some of her teeth and the rest got so many tartar built up ) so her digestion is week and my mum's habit to add meat floss to her food, made it worse. The vet describe some digestion tablets and anti vomit tablets.
Few days later, Naomi didn't get well. She mostly slept and worse she peed in the house. I've baby girl in the house, so u can imagine how frantic i become. Then we noticed there was some greenish stain on her bedding and she kept licking her genital area. We brought her to vet again, This time Vet confirmed that she got Pyometra( infection of the uterus) and need to get surgery ASAP.
So, What is Pyometra? It turn out that it was a common disease middle-aged female dogs that have not been spayed and who was on a heat cycle and in which fertilization did not occur and cause hormonal abnormality. Typically, within two to four months after the cycle, the female starts showing signs of the disease. For more information, u can go to www.peteducation.com.
She went through the 4 hours long bloody surgery. Went home with 2 kinds of antibiotic pills, pain killers and a tube of anti bactericidal gel to be applied on stitches area. And we have to make some kind of bandage with 4 holes for her legs ( from megan sweat shirt) so she can't lick her wound and kept the stitches firm. We have to feed her every 4 hours to prevent stomach empty and indigestion.....so 'bo-eng'
But It's 3 weeks ago. Now she is heal and as healthy as puppy. Happy ending for all
